Solar eclipse 2026

Hey, it’s been a while… seems like I need some major celestial event to prompt me to post anything.

It was a bit of a last minute (or last few days) scramble to obtain solar filters, since I was too busy to notice there was an eclipse coming till a week or two away. After one supplier failed to deliver my order of solar filter film on time, I managed to find and collect some just the day before the eclipse. Everything from filters to eclipse glasses to even welding glass became as rare as hens teeth. They weren’t specific camera solar filters, so needed a compromise in how to photograph. I did also manage to get some eclipse viewing glasses, which I shared around with others there watching. Didn’t want to miss seeing it, especially in case the photos didn’t turn out!

Then to indecisively research where to go regarding best weather chances, and dark skies for the meteor shower that would be later the same night, in between a busy time generally with business. Decided on Bellever Tor in Dartmoor National Park.

The timelapse video is superimposed over a base image, the base image was taken just after sunset and eclipse without filters. So this is not an authentic look regarding the sunlight on the landscape as the eclipse progressed unfortunately. The solar filters were very dark, so for that and other reasons, exposing for the landscape with the filters on was not practical. And I didn't want to risk frying my camera without the solar filter during the eclipse. The closer angle of the timelapse was taken with a Lumix camera from the same locked-off spot. The wide-angle shot at top was taken on an old Canon 5D. Thank you to the sociable local lads who are in the last shot of the timelapse! We all stayed up most of the night photographing the Perseids meteor shower.
